RICHARD ESPINET
Chief Executive Officer
Richard heads Guardian General … from Jamaica to Guyana, Belize to Trinidad and Tobago... Richard focuses on Guardian General’s core business, giving strategic direction to our local, caribbean and international operations. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, and spent the first 11 years of his career with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. This was followed by 16 years working with one of Trinidad and Tobago’s major general insurance providers. For nine of those years, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer and managed relationships with industry partners in Europe and the USA. Richard is an alumnus of St. Mary’s College, (CIC), and studied accounting in the UK for six years.
Richard is a sport enthusiast and participated in track and field events at Secondary School level.
SUNDAR SINGH
Chief Financial Officer
As Chief Financial Officer, Sundar has overall responsibility for Guardian General’s fiscal operations, including the preparation of financial reports for shareholders and government regulatory agencies. He directs the tightly run operations of our finance division, including all systems for financial planning and control, helping us to serve our customers efficiently! Sundar maintains Guardian General’s relationships with banks, regulatory authorities, investment managers and the independent ratings agency, AM Best. Sundar’s career experience spans six years as an Audit Senior at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, stints in banking and the public service followed by 17 years in senior financial positions. He has served as Chief Financial Officer with both Caribbean Home and NEMWIL.
JOAN MITCHELL
Vice President - Trinidad Operations
Joan Mitchell started her insurance career with Nemwil in 1969 and then moved on to Broking in 1972. Having then acquired experience as an insurer and broker, she decided to return to insuring risks and joined Caribbean Home Insurance Company Limited in 1979 as Supervisor of the Underwriting Department. Soon after, she was seconded to the position of Manager of Information Systems. Joan became the first female board member of Caribbean Home Insurance in December 1993 and later Vice President of the Information Systems Department. In 2004, she went on to accept the challenges of the position of Vice President of Trinidad Operations at Guardian General Insurance Limited. Joan’s responsibility for Trinidad Operations entails the management of all Motor, Property and Casualty Underwriting, Claims, Receivables, Marketing, Agency Development and includes the San Fernando sub-branch as well.
DEAN ROMANY
Vice President - Technical Insurance
Dean’s position as Vice President, Technical Insurance is newly created and specific to the Guardian General Group, extending to all 25 territories in which we operate and touching every aspect of our underwriting, reinsurance and risk management. In line with global regulatory trends, Dean drives a risk-based approach to our insurance business, providing comprehensive underwriting/ rating guidelines and quality technical expertise for our insurance operations. He also reports to Guardian General’s Directors of the Compliance Committee on Underwriting & Reinsurance matters. Dean’s ACII qualification, from the Association of the Chartered Insurance Institutes of London, includes a distinction in Quantitative Methods. He carries the highest qualification from that Institute, the FCII, with a distinction in Risk Management and specializes in Reinsurance. His 18 years insurance experience started at the lowest level in the reinsurance area, then the Claims Department at one of the Group Companies (before its integration to Guardian General). Mr. Romany went on to become head of Casualty & Marine Underwriting, Property Underwriting, Underwriting Manager and finally General Manager for the Trinidad Insurance Operations (with additional responsibility for Grenada and the Turks & Caicos). Dean's regional and international experience include one year as Technical Consultant in Jamaica, setting up an Associate Company, and another year in the London market, mainly with international insurance giants CIGNA and Lloyd’s.
JOHN JONES
Executive Manager, Barbados Branch
Mr. John A. Jones is our Principal Representative and is also the General Manager of Guardian General Insurance Limited (formerly Caribbean Home Insurance). He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London, and his association with the company spans over 20 years. He is a former President of both the General Insurance Association of Barbados and the Insurance Institute of Barbados and, in the case of the latter, a founding member. Mr. Jones has had a number of training attachments in both the United Kingdom and Trinidad & Tobago and, prior to joining our Organization, was the Insurance Manager of the former Barclays Finance Corporation. In his substantive position, he has responsibility for the direction and development of general insurance operations in Barbados.
RONALD L. HUGHES
Managing Director, TransNemwil, Grenada
Ronald L. Hughes entered the Insurance Industry in 1984 when he joined Caribbean Insurance Company Ltd. which was subsequently rebranded Trans Nemwil Insurance Ltd. Grenada. Ronald worked in most Departments of the Company and held the positions of Marketing Manager and Claims Manager before being appointed General Manager on 1st March 1997 and then Managing Director on 1st July 1998. Much of his training was received through the Trinidad and Tobago Insurance Academy, The Insurance Institute of America and The National Leadership Institute/CPCU Society. Currently, Mr. Hughes is an Executive Member and a past President of the Association of Grenada Insurance Companies.
KAREN BHOORASINGH
General Manager WIA, Jamaica
Mrs. Karen Bhoorasingh, who was General Manager of Operations, assumed the position of WIA’s General Manager on March 1st, 2006. She is a professional with thirteen years of senior management experience and twenty years of general insurance experience covering the areas of Claims, Risk Management, Marketing, Underwriting, Planning and Administration. Mrs. Bhoorasingh has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the University of London, an ACII designated Chartered Insurer from the Chartered Insurance Institute of College in Kent, England and a BSc (Hons) in Public Administration from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. She joins Lisa Gomes, President of Guardian Asset Management, Jamaica, as the second woman in the Guardian Holdings Group to head a major subsidiary. WIA, which forms part of the Guardian General sub-group, is engaged in property and casualty insurance, primarily in the commercial sector.
