Natural Disasters

When we hear the words “Natural Disaster” many of us picture Haiti after the earthquake on 01/13/2010, Grenada after hurricane Ivan hit on 09/07/2004 or Montserrat after the Soufriere erupted on 06/25/1997.  The images we saw following these catastrophic events were terrifying.  Many were scared, angry or simply confused.

The term “Natural Disaster” refers to the human impact of naturally occurring hazards or phenomenon (e.g. flooding, hurricanes, landslips, earthquakes, tornados, volcanic eruptions).  These naturally occurring hazards become disasters when they cause injuries, fatalities and damage to property.

Such events are difficult to understand because we have no control over when they will happen, where they will strike or the extent of their devastation.  What we can control is our preparedness to deal with the dangers and after effects.  If we take steps to prepare ourselves, we are more likely to remain calm in a situation and therefore make better decisions.

Guardian General would like to help you and your family become more prepared. We have collaborated with the faculty of Engineering – University of the West Indies to bring you three booklets:
